When the work is completed on 29 levee sites deemed critical by Governor Schwarzenegger, there will still be about another 100 sites that need to be shored up.
Deputy director of the state department of water resources Les Harder says all the sites will only be brought up to 50 to 80 year flood protection levels:
What we’re seeing here is a flood control system that is aging and is very vulnerable to distress and damage. It literally is washing away in front of us in some areas.
New Orleans, destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, had 250 year flood protection level.About 30 thousand people in Sacramento, most in the Pocket area, live where there is less than 100 year flood protection.
