Hospital officials had warned that the project could be canceled if a court challenge caused significant construction delays. The judge decided that some construction could continue while Sutter resolves issues over traffic, parking and air quality.
John Borsos with the Service Employees International Union – the group that filed the challenge – says they plan to continue fighting the project either in the courts or at city hall.
"And we’re hopeful that we are able to win either on appeal or probably more importantly before the Sacramento City Council."
The union is at odds with Sutter over labor issues.
Meantime, Sutter officials say the ruling is final and allows them to stay on track with the $500 million expansion.
