A new ban on liquor along the American River Parkway during summer holidays goes into effect this weekend. The county’s Chief Parks Ranger Dave Lydick says previous weekends were filled with drunken brawls, injuries and arrests.

"The summer holiday weekends have gotten to be completely out of control with the numbers of people rafting down the river and the alcohol that’s consumed and that leads to fights and all kinds of serious problems."

The ordinance prohibits alcohol on the upper part of the parkway from Hazel Avenue to Watt Avenue during the Labor Day, Memorial Day and July 4th weekends.

County Supervisors approved the ban in August.
