During an appearance at Cal State Long Beach Tuesday, Schwarzenegger said the hurricane was a wake up call to fix California’s 100-year old levee system.

"Because of Katrina I think that the Legislature and the federal government has taken it more seriously that we have very vulnerable levees and they’re literally one big storm or one earthquake away from a major, major disaster so this is why it’s important for people to pass this measure."

Schwarzenegger says Proposition 1-E would authorize $4.6 billion in bond money for levee repair to protect Californians from Katrina-style flooding. Opponents say bond measures pass the buck to future generations.
