Originally the bill required schools to teach students about the contributions of gays and lesbians.  After opposition, author Democrat Sheila Kuehl gutted it.  Now it adds sexual orientation to an existing list of characteristics protected from discrimination in schools.  But that didn’t make the Assembly debate any less heated.  Here are Republicans Jay La Suer and Dennis Mountjoy:

“This bill is basically a predatory bill that preys upon the innocence of children.”

“You can thank God that Adolf Hitler wasn’t a homosexual, because we could no longer speak adversely about him if this bill was to become law.”

Democrat Jackie Goldberg – who’s openly gay - fired back:

“I restrained myself as long as I could, but poppycock!  This bill is not about agendas, it’s about making a school environment a safe and healthy place for all school children."

The bill now heads back to the Senate.
