Sweeping environmental legislation, a measure creating a new state Department of Public Health, and a bill to allow phone companies into the cable-t-v business are just some of the issues awaiting lawmakers’ attention. The Assembly Speaker, Democrat Fabian Nunez is behind the cable t-v bill as well as a measure that will allow the Mayor of Los Angeles more control over public schools in the city. Lawmakers will also debate whether to raise the minimum wage. Redistricting, or re-drawing legislative boundaries is also on the radar. All that will also happen at the same time as a special session called by Governor Schwarzenegger to deal with the issue of prison overcrowding.
