Work crews are shutting down service in the downtown area for the next five consecutive weekends. Mike Wiley with Regional Transit says they’re doing it so that work crews can extend light rail from the K Street Mall to the Amtrak station.

"Some of the last track work to be done is to connect the existing track up to the new track and in order to make the splices if you will of the track we have to actually shut down the service and splice in a whole new section of rail."

During the construction work, buses will be transporting passengers to stations between the Alkali Flat and 16th Street light rail stations.
