The city council has approved nine more officers for the police department’s street crimes unit – bringing the total number of officers in the unit to 16. Police Chief Bob Simmons says more gang members are moving into town from neighboring communities.

"We have seen the result of it being pushed across the border. We have a lot of gang members that we’ve already identified living in Elk Grove and we want to make sure that we send the message that that won’t be tolerated."

Simmons says they’re also working with other agencies at the federal, state and local levels to get rid of gangs.
