Robert Weygandt defeated fellow Republican Jerry Simmons in a race that saw record campaign spending for the county. More than a half-million dollars was spent on defeating Wygant, who says he raised about 450-thousand dollars for his campaign. He says the race was “unlike anything” he’s ever seen.
“We’ve spent probably four times more than I’ve ever spent in seeking this office. It was absurd, but we knew what we had to compete against.”
Simmons is Sierra Joint Community College District board president. He had the backing of wealthy developer Angelo Tsakopoulos. Weygandt ended up defeating Simmons with over 70 percent of the vote.
