With more than half of the votes counted and a lead of more than three points, around 1 a.m. Angelides declared victory to a packed Sacramento hotel ballroom full of supporters.
“I’m looking forward to being the Democratic standard-bearer from now to November and your next Governor.”
Angelides told the crowd why he thought he was the victor of the tough, divisive, often negative campaign.
“We’ve won this fight because we’ve stood for something greater - a California that gives its people more chances, not fewer to climb the ladder of opportunity.”
About 1:15 a.m. Westly called Angelides to concede. A Westly aide says the controller is ready to do whatever he can to help the Treasurer defeat Schwarzenegger in the fall.
