Sacramento firefighters will be handing out life vests all weekend long at the Sunrise footbridge as part of their Operation River Safe campaign. And Christian Pebbles with the Metro Fire District says if you think you’ll look nerdy wearing one, think again. 

"One of the problems we see is people don’t think the life vests are very cool, it’s not cool to have a life vest on. So, we’re trying to say ‘hey it’s okay to not be cool and be alive than be not alive and uncool or cool.’"

Pebbles says to make sure they get the jackets back, each person who returns a life vest at the Goethe Park collection site will get a free scoop of ice cream.
