On-Time Budget?

Democratic Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez puts it like this:

“If we don’t have a budget completed in this state by the constitutional deadline which is June 15, shame on us.”

Nunez says Democrats and the Governor are “very close.”  The seven and a half billion dollar windfall has allowed the Governor to fund controversial areas like schools, and the reserve.  And Republican political analyst Dan Schnurr says don’t forget it’s an election year for many:

“There’s such an incentive this year for them to come together and there’s such a significant surplus that allows them to come together – the odds of them coming together are much greater this year than in a long long time.”

Schnurr says an on-time budget will help Schwarzenegger’s image – but it will help lawmakers from both parties too. He says the only people probably hoping against an on-time budget are the Democratic gubernatorial candidates: Steve Westly and Phil Angelides.
