Legislation that continues emergency prescription drug coverage for some of the poorest Californians has passed both houses of the state legislature. It authorizes the state to pay for prescriptions until the end of January 2007 for seniors and the disabled whose coverage was transferred from Medi-Cal to the new Medicare program. The Governor is expected to sign the bill quickly. Democratic Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez backed the measure:

“We’re talking about the elderly, the mentally ill, we’re talking about aids patients, we’re talking about people who are in long-term facilities that need these medications – we’re talking about cancer patients – these are the people in essence, need these drugs to stay alive.”

The bill has bi-partisan support.
