Last week a jury ruled against the rocket-maker Aerojet, and set damages at $14 million. A decision on punitive damages would have come next … but Aerojet’s parent, Gen Corp, decided to settle. The plaintiffs said they sustained medical and economic damages, because rocket fuel ingredients leaked into the ground water.

Hundreds of plaintiffs had been involved in four lawsuits like this over the years. This case was down to just 10 plaintiffs. A Gen Corp spokesperson says the evidence didn’t support the verdict, but the company decided to settle. This takes the risk of a really large punitive damages award off the table.
