The American Bach Soloists present St. Matthew Passion on Monday, May 8th at 7:30 p.m. at the Mondavi Center in Davis.
The St. Matthew Passion is a vast, three-hour tapestry of Baroque music and New Testament text. On one level, it’s a piece of storytelling, featuring soloists as Jesus, his disciples, and other well-known characters. Conductor Jeffrey Thomas.
Alongside that main narrative, there’s a second level that serves to express the voice of the people.
There’s yet another level of commentary. This one is provided in familiar chorales, or hymn tunes, throughout the piece, designed to pluck the heartstrings of listeners.
