The department has three multi-lingual toll free lines – in Spanish, Hmong and English.

"You have reached the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Gang Information Line. This 800 number is designated to receive information on current or upcoming suspected gang violence and/or activity."

Sergeant Randy Yen heads the department’s gang unit.

"This is something we’ve been working hard on to try to open up the lines of communication to the community so that they can take back their neighborhoods."

Callers have the option to leave their information anonymously or leave a call back number. The calls will be reviewed by the gang unit, which consists of nine detectives.

"Some folks are in constant fear of retaliation from gang members and this sort of gives them an outlet."

Yen says he hopes the phone lines will give them better control of gang activity, especially as the weather heats up – a time that traditionally sees a spike in gang violence.
