Rebuilding Together – a national group with a Sacramento office – plans to refurbish 15 homes in the Lemon Hill neighborhood next month and 15 more in the North Highlands area this fall.

"And we have about 800 volunteers that come out on both of those days to repair homes and the goal of those days is to rehabilitate the housing stock in neighborhoods in the Sacramento area."

Executive Director Carrie Grip says the project not only helps keep property values up it also helps low-income people in need.

"Many of these people are in a situation where they have to choose between medicine and food or maintaining their home and of course maintaining their home is gong to be lowest on the list."

Sacramento County is expected to partially fund the project with a grant of $182,000.
