The first new apartment project will have 60 units … and a third are only for people with disabilities. It should be open later this year. A second will open in 2007, with 53 units. Many of those are reserved for low-income people with disabilities. Rents at either will begin at a little more than $200 a month for the neediest renters. 

The apartment projects are close to downtown Davis, in recognition that some disabled applicants will have jobs nearby. Social Security pays $800 a month on average to the disabled … so the low rents mean such people would have money left for food and other basics.
