Jed York of the 49ers says he expects the agreement to be in place this spring. He is the son of John and Denise York, owners of the 49er NFL franchise.
The younger York said the San Jose SaberCats have been encouraging the Niners to come into the league. It could create a regional rival. The SaberCats would have to waive their 75-mile territorial rights to allow a competing franchise. Their general manager, Ramune Ambrozaitis, says they prefer the Sacramento location for a Niners franchise. The Forty-Niners paid an undisclosed amount in 2001 for the rights to an arena football franchise … and would lose their down payment if they don’t act by mid-June.
