Democratic Assemblyman Leland Yee says whether through the state Department of Consumer Affairs or otherwise—he wants new standards for California nail salons.
“Clearly before this session ends I’m going to get legislation out if the department can’t handle this issue.”
There have been three bacterial outbreaks at nail salons in recent years in California. Yee introduced a bill last year for new standards that was vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger in favor of a working group. Department of Consumer Affairs Director Charlene Zettel says that group is examining current cleanliness standards and training.
“Certainly the outbreak in Texas gives us added momentum to work faster through the working group process.”
Zettel says either new regulations or proposed legislation will emerge from the group in the next few months.
