A recent change in state law gives CSUs the go-ahead to offer independent doctorates in education. Previously, only University of California was allowed to grant the degrees.
Sacramento State’s Mike Lee says they’re still putting the program together.
"This particular degree requires that we work very, very closely with the community colleges as well as the K-12 leadership and in the next few months there will be a lot of collaboration and meetings and consultation with the group so it is a very exciting time."
Cal State had been granting some joint doctorates in partnership with UC and private universities. But CSU officials asked the state for their own programs to keep up with growing demand.
The new degree will be offered in 2007.
