The resignation of Corrections and Rehabilitation Secretary Rod Hickman was fairly abrupt – but she wasn’t surprised by it, says Senator Gloria Romero.  The Democrat chairs the Select Committee on California’s Correctional system, which has been holding hearings on the progress of reforms.  She says leadership may have changed, but the need for reform has not:

“I am serious about rehabilitation and they had best bring us individuals who are going to move in that vein.”

Governor Schwarzenegger has asked Corrections under-secretary Jeanne Woodford to serve as acting Secretary.  In a written statement, the Governor said Hickman took one of the toughest jobs in state government and accomplished much toward Schwarzenegger’s reform goals.  Another hearing is set for next month.
