The conservancy has an initial budget of three and a half million dollars from the state legislature. Its mission is to buy land for preservation, chosen within a 22-county territory in the Sierras … and numerous cities were vying for its headquarter offices and workforce of 20.
The conservancy’s board has just made Auburn the interim choice. The board wants the permanent location to be within 30 minutes of Auburn, or in Auburn itself, so that the same staff can easily stay on. Cities like El Dorado Hills, Martell and Truckee had been contenders.
