Assemblywoman Sharon Runner loads one of several heavy boxes full of signed petitions onto the Sacramento County registrar’s office counter.  Statewide, more than 700-thousand such petitions were delivered to put the initiative known as “Jessica’s Law” to voters.
Senator George Runner is co-sponsoring the measure with wife Sharon – both Republicans:

“Jessica’s law is a result of the fact that we have not been able to get important legislation through the state legislature dealing with the issue of sexual predators and protecting our children and families,” said George Runner.

The initiative would include longer sentences for violent and habitual sex offenders, as well as lifetime GPS monitoring.  It would also mean they couldn’t live within 2-thousand feet of a park or a school.
Opponents say that provision will force sex offenders into rural areas…and they worry about the cost of the GPS monitoring.
