The campaign was triggered by the controversy over the Danish newspaper cartoons.

"After the cartoon incident we felt this is the best way to do it."

Basim Elkarra is with the Sacramento Valley branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. They’re joining a national educational effort called Explore the Life of Muhammad. Elkarra says Sacramento area residents are curious.

"They’ll call our office occasionally just to ask some questions, with all this negative perception out there, people are just really trying to figure out, ‘well, what is Islam all about?’"

The campaign includes the distribution of free books and DVDs throughout the Sacramento area and a free community education day at the SALAM Community Center on College Oak Drive on Saturday, February 25th.
