Rex Babin – the Bee’s editorial cartoonist – addresses the issue in his cartoon Tuesdaywhich depicts a radical Islamic extremist holding a rocket-launcher facing off against an editorial cartoonist holding a large ink pen.

Babin says it’s unfortunate that protests over the cartoons, which first appeared in a Denmark newspaper, have turned violent.

"I think the cartoons in question were mean spirited and hateful cartoons and I can understand all sorts of people being upset about them. I would certainly encourage protests but the key is non violent protests."

The controversial cartoons include one that depicts Muhammad wearing a turban shaped as a bomb.

Outraged Muslims have set fire to Danish embassies in Syria and Lebanon and held violent protests in Afghanistan.
