City Councilwoman Lauren Hammond says King was a role model and inspiration.

"I can remember being a little kid, watching the civil rights movement, watching the protests, watching the marches and her face was always the same – stoic, a real hero. And she didn’t have to continue the civil rights legacy after her husband died so many years ago but she did because she had her own commitment to fairness and equality."

Martin Luther King's widow died overnight. She was 78. Her sister says she passed away at a holistic health center in Mexico. King had suffered a serious stroke and heart attack last August.
