It’s never been clear exactly where to find Marlboro Country, but Philip Morris wants to make sure that it isn’t Guangdong, China. 

Fake Marlboros were at the heart of a suit filed in Sacramento’s federal court days ago. The cigarette maker is accusing 23 convenience stores in the Central Valley, in Manteca and to the south, of selling these phony smokes. A few years ago, 23 stores in the Sacramento region were targeted for the same thing. 

It’s estimated that California loses $300 million annually in cigarette sales taxes due to black market cigarettes. A carton of fake Marlboros can be produced for as little as $2
