Researchers at the center will develop the science of using light to understand the inner workings of cells and tissues.

Center director Dennis Matthews says it will help boost the city’s reputation as a growing biotech area and help invigorate the Oak Park area.

"Some of it will start to manifest itself I think in new companies that’ll be centered in this area."

The new building is the only National Science Foundation –funded center focused on the use of light in biology and medicine. It’s on Stockton and 2^nd, across the street from the UC Davis Med center.
