The Service Employees International Union lawsuit charges that the project would create too much pollution, consequently violating state environmental laws.
But Sutter spokesperson Nancy Turner says the suit is motivated by labor issues. "We don’t have a union here and that is why we believe they’re continuing to put the pressure on our project. It has nothing to do with the merits of the project. The merits of the project have been affirmed by the city council and the planning commission."
Sacramento City Council members last month unanimously approved the expansion project which includes a women and children’s hospital, a pediatric ER and a new parking garage.
A union official did not return our request for comment.
