Beginning January 13th, the airport will start using two new walk-through portals at the security check-in. They’re called puffers. The devices puff air over a person from head to toe, releasing particles that are immediately whisked away for instant analysis. They detect explosives … and their use should cut down the need for the customary pat-downs that take time and are often awkward for the passenger. Puffers have passed government field trials … and they’ve also just been added at the airports serving Washington, D.C.
