A neighborhood group that opposed the plan is hailing the decision. Spokesman Steve Detrick of the Elk Grove Coalition Advocating Proper Planning lives right next to where the store would have been. He says he’s very happy.
"Oh absolutely it was probably the best Christmas gift I could have been given this year. I was surprised how early it came but I felt with the interactions that our group has had with Angelo Tsakopoulos and Wal-Mart that we worked together for a win-win for everybody."
The decision by developer Tsakopoulos and the retail giant comes after several months of meetings with residents and Elk Grove officials.
Wal-Mart officials say they still want to build a supercenter in Elk Grove.
