Lana Wyant with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s office says under the “Women Helping Women” scam, women were asked to invest as much as $5,000 for the chance of winning a payoff.

"But in fact, that wasn’t the case, only a very few women were getting these large gifts and women in general were not being helped as a charity gift concept would suggest so we required the defendants who pled guilty in this case to pay money into a charitable fund."

The money will go to five different legitimate women’s organizations including: Francis House, Saint John’s Shelter for Women and Children, the Sacramento Crisis Nurseries, River City Recovery and Strategies for Change.
