But some neighbors are opposed to the idea. Don Chernich, who lives near the school, says it would create too much noise and traffic.

"The district has basically ignored our requests and overall this proposal is being put forward with little regard to how the stadium will affect the lives of the people living near Rio."

But district spokeswoman Deidra Powell-Williams says the school needs a new field. Right now Rio students are using the stadium at El Camino High School. She says they want to work with neighbors on the project.

"We’re trying to keep a balance between being sensitive to the neighborhood as well as meeting the needs for our students and so that’s a very difficult situation."

The $2 Million sports facility would be paid for by a non-profit group called the American River Sports Association.

Neighbors say they may file a lawsuit to block the project.
