District spokesman Jim Elliot says they want to lower the number of students being dismissed from school because of drug possession.

"We noticed we were suspending and expelling some students for drug possession and we saw some instances in the community concerning drug use and so we wanted to do this, just be upfront with our community that that has no place in school."

According to district records, nearly 300 students were suspended for drug-related incidents during the 2003-2004 school year. Local law enforcement officers will bring the dogs in to conduct unnannounced searches of lockers, parked cars and other areas starting next school year.
