The research animals died in the summer of 2004 when a heater malfunctioned, raising the temperature to 115 degrees in the room they were housed in. Vice Chancellor for Administration Stan Nosek says they regret the incident.

"When we have an accident like this that in fact could have been preventable it’s very regrettable and we accept the responsibility for that and we look to move on to make the safety of those rooms better than obviously this one was."

After the monkeys died, the US Department of Agriculture investigated the incident and subsequently fined the university for not keeping the room’s thermostat and cutoff switch in good working order.
