At the Vietnamese Catholic Martyrs Church on Jackson Road, a steady stream of people arrived during the noon hour to look at the statue, including Bobbi Novielli of San Jose.
"I think it’s amazing. I think it’s God showing that he really exists but I also think that it’s God showing that he’s very unhappy with the world right now."
The statue – which is outside the church – has a reddish stain trailing from the left eye. "Whether it’s real blood or not, it’s interesting that people are coming and praying."
A little over two-dozen people are gazing quietly at the statue. Neil Quesan from Washington State is visiting family nearby and wanted to see the statue before he left town.
"It’s certainly fascinating. If the church is investigating I think they’ll disprove it or it’ll be inconclusive because they have to be very careful about these things. It’s all about faith."
Skeptics say such incidents often turn out to be hoaxes. Diocese officials say they’re looking into the matter.
