At least five local farmers in Sacramento and Yuba Counties are paring these two unlikely businesses. It’s a match that works well for the farmers, the skiers and the fish, which are sold live for specialty markets and sport fishing.
Running both businesses provides two revenue streams, one from the catfish crop, the other from recreational waterskiers. Powerboats pulling waterskiers churn up a lot of oxygen, which is good for whiskered fish. And slalom waterskiers need a controlled environment with buoys, no traffic and no floating obstacles. And because catfish are bottom feeders, they stay clear of the speedboats and waterskiers above.
