Project architect Jim Shepherd says long-time residents may not even recognize the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament when they step inside. "I think they will completely be blown away. It’s just a stunning restoration."

The $34 Million project included restoring the cathedral’s 175 foot-high dome which was closed back in 1932. "The color, the intensity, the light, I think it will be overwhelming."

Other improvements at the historic cathedral at 11th and K Streets include new oak flooring, restored artworks and seismic strengthening.

Sunday’s opening mass is sold out. On Monday, Governor Schwarzenegger and first lady Maria Shriver will attend a prayer service for community and religious leaders.
