The charity group is gearing up to provide about 1,500 people with Thanksgiving meals next week. They usually have all the food they need this time of year, but spokeswoman Christie Holderegger says this year they still need about 150 turkeys.
"So that’s why we started getting a little bit nervous this time of year. I’m not sure if it’s because of all the disasters that have been happening and people’s resources have been stretched so thinly that they haven’t been able to focus so much on what’s going on in our own community."
She says they’re serving more people this year, including about 40 hurricane Katrina evacuee-families living at Mather Field.
Donations of turkey and other food can be dropped off at the Volunteers of America central kitchen at 700 North 5th Street.
