The money comes from the Energy and Water Appropriations Bill for fiscal year 2006 approved by the House. That $40 Million figure represents an almost 65% increase over last year’s funding.
"It is a lot more than last year."
Sacramento Congresswoman Doris Matsui says it’ll go to ongoing projects including levee protections. "We’re moving forward with what’s happening on the American River also and that would be including directing the Corps and the Bureau of Reclamation to work together on flood control improvements to Folsom Dam and we’re also looking at an auxiliary spillway there too."
The spending bill also includes $1 Million to look at the benefits of a controversial plan to build a dam on the American River at Auburn. Supporter say it would provide better flood protection but environmentalists say a dam would threaten habitats.
