Oracle maintains a back-office work force of 500 in its original building, constructed in 1997. A second building went up, as part of a grand scheme … and as many as many as 175 more staff worked there. But 2 years ago the company vacated that building, as it shifted jobs to India.
That empty building … and 17 undeveloped acres … went to a Bay Area investor for an estimated price of $26 million. There was a time when Hewlett Packard, Oracle and Agilent were anchors for a burgeoning tech sector in South Placer County. Today, all of them are less than they were, with no indications at all that they’ll ever regain their prominence in Sacramento.
