Manteca Police Department
Police in Manteca say they’ve cut the rate of auto thefts by employing old fashion tactics.
Car thefts in the San Joaquin County city of Manteca dropped 20 percent from January of this year through September, compared to the same period in 2004.
Captain Dave Bricker of the city police department says the decline is the by-product of shoring up foot patrols in sections of town that were gang infested.
"By concentrating in those areas we've been able to reduce both auto theft and auto burglaries."
Bricker says part of the strategy is to force the gangs to move to other cities.
"We can't stop people from being criminals, but we can put enough pressure on them, but maybe they'll be a criminal somewhere else."
Bricker says the police hope to incorporate some high tech hardware to deter crime in Manteca. He says the city is looking at installing surveillance cameras on the main routes in and out of town.
