If Measure X passes, Davis would convert farmland on the outskirts of town into a residential and commercial area.
Yes on X spokesman Nathan Ballard says it’s all about smart growth.
"Davis has a housing needs policy that dictates that we need to grow by one percent per year and Covell Village is the best way to fullfill our housing needs."
Covell Village would include a mix of housing and some retail including a possible Trader Joe’s.
But opponents like Sierra Club spokesman Don Mooney say it would create too much traffic and pollution.
"So what we have here is a development that’s going out into some fine farmland when we could be developing in other areas of the city. It’s definitey urban sprawl."
The proposed development is on a 400 acre plot north of Covell Boulevard between Pole Line Road and F Street.
