The number of patients at the cancer center has gone up 50% in the past five years.
"We just have to have more space."
Center director Ralph deVere White says they expect more patients as the Central Valley’s population keeps expanding and growing older.
Outpatient visits are projected to go up by at least 6% a year through 2009. The $35 Million project will add a new three story building to the existing facility on X Street.
"The first floor is going to be dedicated to pediatric oncology, the other two floors will increase our space for seeing patients and for support services such as research nurses, data managers, pharmacy."
The University of California Board of Regents is expected to sign off on the project next month and construction is scheduled to start in two years.
