The Davis Energy Group has been chosen by the U.S. Green Building Council as one of a dozen firms heading the program nationally.

The council plans to create a system for measuring and certifying the green building features of new homes. They'll assign a rating buyers can easily understand.

The goal is to use less energy, save money and create less smog.

Dirty air is a particular problem in Sacramento, where the air generally fails to meet federal ozone standards.

A similar program for commercial construction, called Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design has been around since March of 2000.
