System Fire Chief Lance McCasland says they’ll be helping the New Orleans International Airport fire department.
“The two firefighters are going to be really performing the same work they do here for Sacramento International Airport and that is aircraft rescue firefighting services which responds to airplane emergencies and other airport emergencies. They are prepared to meet the challenge. They’re going to be basically providing support for the military and relief airplanes that come into New Orleans.”
Although the New Orleans airport is closed to commercial traffic, it is open to military and relief aircraft.
The two firefighters - Steven Loza and Michael Rubach - have extensive training in aircraft rescue firefighting. They’ll be stationed at the airport for 30-days.
