U C Merced Grand Opening Monday
The new University of California at Merced holds its grand opening ceremony Monday.

U C Merced will become the tenth campus in the University of California system, a system seen by many as the greatest in the entire world.
Merced is located near the center of the San Joaquin Valley and is the first U C to be located there. Democratic Assemblywoman Barbara Matthews, who represents the city of Merced, says the new university will have a major impact on the region. "A university that our youth can see and know that it’s absolutely for them. And we know that participation in higher education is gonna really increase over the next few years, just because of the presence of the university."
U C Merced will open its doors to one thousand students- 600 freshmen, 300 transfer students, and one hundred graduate students.The Labor Day opening ceremony will attract dignitaries from across the state, including former governors George Deukmejian and Gray Davis.
