A spokesman for Seattle-based Horizon Air says the airline is talking with officials in Modesto about daily service between the cities, which are some 350 miles apart. A flight would take about one hour. By motor vehicle it's about a six-hour drive.

Horizon Spokesman Dan Russo says Modesto is on the list of cities considered for L-A service because of the region's population.

"At the very least it's a numbers game, of a huge population base in the L-A basin area and a significant and growing population in the Central Valley."

Russo says there's no timetable on the decision, primarily because the company doesn't have any available aircraft. He says to establish service between Modesto and L-A would likely require Horizon to invest in a 20 million dollar, 74 passenger plane.

The manager of the Modesto Airport says he's confident that Horizon would have plenty of customers if it serves the facility.
