Democratic Assemblywoman Cindy Montanez is one of three authors of three campaign finance reform bills. She says the recent dust up over Governor Schwarzenegger’s million-dollar-a-year payments from muscle magazines has aroused the public’s concern.
"Voters need to know if it’s their interests or the interest of special interests that are motivating their elected officials."
The bills also would require candidates and elected officials to report in detail the sources of their personal income up to ten million dollars a year.
Republicans, including state Senator Abel Maldonado, immediately charged the Democrats with trying to embarrass the governor. Maldonado referred to the former Democratic Secretary of State who resigned under a cloud last March.
"Why aren’t they finishing the reforms and all the things that Mr. Shelley did: bringing state funds into a political campaign."
The three new bills will not be heard in the legislature until next year.
